Pelion High athletes prove they are readers and leaders
PELION, S.C. — Pelion High School student-athletes aren’t just leaders on the field of play. They’re also setting positive examples for children in their community.
The Panthers launched the PHS Athletes as Readers and Leaders program on Friday, October 28, at Forts Pond Elementary in Pelion. Six athletes read to elementary students and discussed the importance of reading, wellness, nutrition, academics, leadership and training.
“This is an excellent opportunity for our athletes to share and encourage younger students in the Pelion community,” said PHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Dann Holland.
The program was created in response to a Stanford University study, which reported children who play sports are less likely to become obese. The reports also found that overweight children are often too shy to join a sport. PHS modeled its program after the one created by Napa Valley Unified School District Librarian Kate MacMillan and Napa High School Football Coach Troy Mott.
PHS Athletes as Readers and Leaders will continue with monthly visits to Forts Pond Elementary and Pelion Elementary School. Student-athletes and trainers from several sports will participate.
