One killed in I-26 accident near Chapin Friday evening
Chapin, SC (By: Paul Kirby) – A pedestrian who had been involved in an accident on I-26 near Chapin, was struck and killed by another vehicle Friday evening. The fatal accident occurred just after 8:00 p.m. on I-26 near the 91-mile marker at the Chapin exit.
According to a spokesman for the SC Highway Patrol, there had been an accident in the west bound lanes at that location just prior to the fatal wreck. One of the motorist who had been involved in the first accident got out of the vehicle they were in and was standing or walking in the east bound lanes. That pedestrian was then struck by what the trooper described as an “unknown” vehicle that did not stop. The injured person was then struck by a second vehicle, a Nissan SUV, and died on the scene as a result of the injuries she received.
Firefighters from Lexington County and Columbia/Richland responded as did EMS and law enforcement. A representative from the coroner’s office was also on the scene.
The name of the deceased individual will be released by the coroner after the notification of their next of kin. The accident is under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
