Irmo Fire District responds to vehicle accident with multiple patients on I-26 and Fernandina Road

St. Andrews, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Irmo Fires District responded to a car crash that started when several vehicles collided on I-26 between St. Andrews and Piney Grove Roads and then spread to the adjacent frontage road. Apparently, one of the vehicles that was involved in the accident went off the interstate, through the barrier fence, and landed upside down on Fernandina Road.

According to Jeff Allen, a spokesman for the fire district, multiple patients were transported from the scene. Firefighters reported that at least one individual was trapped for a short time, but rescuers quickly extricated that person from the wreckage of the vehicle.

The Irmo firefighters were assisted by personnel from the City of Columbia Fire Department, Lexington and Richland County EMS, an officer from the Irmo Police Department, and the SC Highway Patrol.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol.
