Shed fire on Cornerstone lane attributed to an un-authorized burn

Red Bank, SC (Paul Kirby) – A shed in the back yard of a home near Red Bank was destroyed Monday afternoon by a fire that was apparently caused by an illegal controlled burn.

The fire service was dispatched around 1:00 p.m. and responding firefighters reported a thick column of black smoke in the sky long before they arrived on the scene.

The shed that was in the rear of the home was fully involved when the first units arrived on the scene. Although county firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, the shed was a complete loss. A portion of the grass in the back yard was also burned by the fire.

Harrison Cahill, a spokesman for Lexington County, confirmed Monday afternoon that the entire county is under a total ban on outdoor burning. The cool dry weather that we are currently experiencing makes conditions outdoors volatile and even a small fire can quickly get out of control.

Residents and property owners who lose control of their fires can be fined and may be responsible for any damage they cause to the property of others.
