SCE&G using helicopter in new power line construction near West Columbia

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) - SCE&G, South Carolina’s largest utility company, has been using a helicopter in the construction of some new high voltage power lines in Lexington County this week.
Several times recently, the traffic on Sunset Boulevard was blocked while the helicopter pulled the new lines from the tall poles that carry the highest voltage. It caught the eye of many motorist along Hwy. 378 who slowed to watch the helicopter as it flew just above the poles.
SCE&G says they are adding 320 miles of power lines. This work is being done in anticipation of their new nuclear reactor at the V.C. Summer Station near the small town of Jenkinsville coming on-line. That new reactor will add to the capacity of the reactors that are already at that site and have been providing power to SC for decades.
