Calks Ferry Rd. closed by trash truck fire

Round Hill, SC (Paul Kirby) – Firefighters from several Lexington County fire stations responded to a trash truck on fire on Calks Ferry Road near the railroad tracks just off Two Notch Road Friday afternoon.

When the first due fire trucks arrived on the scene, they found flames coming from the truck. The truck’s operator dumped some of the trash into the road, shutting down Calks Ferry for quite some time. Firefighters used ladders to access the trash compartment of the truck so that they could douse the trash that was still in it with water.

Once the fire was brought under control, one fire truck remained on the scene where the trash covered the road. They were still standing by on that scene after 5:30 p.m. waiting for a cleanup crew from the trash company that was enroute from Columbia.

Another truck from the fire service followed the truck with its remaining load to the county’s landfill in Edmund. The landfill area is where the truck could be emptied as the smoldering trash was doused by the fire crews.
