Truck crashes into structure dropping awning on gas pumps and a car at Lexington convenience store

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – A delivery truck crashed into the structure that supported an awning over the gas pumps at a small convenience store on West Main Street in Lexington Wednesday morning. The store is across from Hudson Ford and is near the Dunkin Donuts at the intersection of US Hwy 378 and West Main.

Officers from the Lexington Police Department responded to 1202 West Main at the Rite Stop Food Mart just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The awning’s supports were damaged when a truck from H.T. Hackney, a convenience store supply company, hit them, causing the awning to crash down on a car and the fuel pumps below.

Specially equipped personnel and equipment from the fire service responded to this incident. This included hazmat trucks and a collapse unit with special tools and equipment for lifting and shoring structures that have fallen or failed.

Personnel on the scene shut down the fuel supply system and crews made sure that the structure was safe before the business notified a contractor that could come and begin the cleanup.
