Mother, son identified as victims in two-car crash near Batesburg

Lexington, SC - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the two individuals that died due to a two-vehicle accident on January 26, 2017 at approximately 3:00 P.M. on Summerland Avenue near Batesburg in Lexington County.
According to Coroner Margaret Fisher, Mr. Gary Lee Cook, 44, and Ms. Mary Cook, 69, both of Batesburg-Leesville were killed when their vehicle crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.
Mr. Cook and Ms. Cook, his mother, died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the accident. Both were wearing seatbelts when the collision occurred. The driver of the other vehicle was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland and was reported to be in stable condition.
Autopsies have been scheduled for January 27, 2017. The South Carolina Highway Patrol investigation of the accident is ongoing.
