CHAPIN, S.C. – The national nonprofit organization, Homes For Our Troops (HFOT), will award a home to Army Sergeant Robert Barber on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017. SGT Barber was severely injured while serving in Afghanistan. The event will be held at 104 Glenwood Drive, Chapin, S.C. Shuttles to the event will be provided at Chapin High School, 300 Columbia Ave., Chapin, S.C. 29036 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
On June 20, 2012, SGT Barber was conducting operations with the 133rd Military Police Company in Khost, Afghanistan, when a suicide bomber set off an improvised explosive device (IED). The blast resulted in the loss of his right leg and severe damage to his left leg.
Now medically retired, Robert loves spending time in the outdoors, riding his motorcycle and taking his two sons and daughter to baseball games with his wife Heather. He would eventually like to start hunting and hand cycling. He plans to return to college when he receives his specially adapted home.
Robert’s new home features more than 40 major special adaptations such as widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower, and kitchen amenities that include pull-down shelving and lowered countertops. The home will also alleviate the mobility and safety issues associated with a traditional home, including navigating a wheelchair through narrow hallways or over thresholds, riding on carpets, or reaching for cabinets that are too high.
HFOT will present the home to Robert mortgage-free, thanks to contributions from donors, supporters, and corporate partners. Currently, there are more than 80 active projects in need of funding to complete. To find out more on how to get involved or make a donation visitwww.hfotusa.org.
For five consecutive years, HFOT has received a 4-star rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency by Charity Navigator, America’s premier charity evaluator. The 4-star rating represents the highest one achievable by nonprofits.
