Overturned logging truck disrupts traffic on Fish Hatchery Road near Pelion
Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) – A tractor trailer logging truck overturned on Fish Hatchery Road just east of Pelion Monday afternoon, blocking one lane of traffic for quite some time. The accident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. near the New Hope Church Road intersection. The truck was travelling east toward SC Hwy 6 when it passed New Hope Church Rd., lost control, and turned over onto its side. The load of pine logs it was carrying spilled from the truck and spread into the wood-line just off the road. The first callers pulled up at the wreck scene just after the crash occurred. The man who was operating the truck was able to climb out of its damaged cab before firefighters and EMTs arrived on the scene. It did not appear that any fuel leaked from the tanks of the truck, but the cab and trailer were heavily damaged by the crash. Drivers coming from Hwy. 6 were having to slow and merge into the opposing lane to maneuver around the crash site. Supervisors from the logging company were on the scene making arrangements to have the mess cleaned up as an officer from the SC Transport Police was doing his investigation. There was also a Lexington County Sheriff’s Deputy on location and a SC State Trooper assisting with traffic control at the site. Employees with the logging company were also assisting in directing motorists around the crash. The truck was righted and removed from the scene by early evening. Law enforcement has not released the cause of the crash or any details regarding any charges that may have been levied against the driver or the logging company that owned the truck.
