Official update on Cayce officer involved shooting
Cayce, SC (Staff Writer) - On February 5th, 2017, at approximately 8:15 p.m., Cayce DPS officers responded to 141 Tufton Court located in the City of Cayce for a report of gunshots coming from the residence. Officers arrived on scene and attempted to contact the occupant of the residence by phone, but were unsuccessful.
Uniformed officers then approached the residence and knocked on the front door, while identifying themselves as police. A person, later identified as John William Day, opened the front door brandishing a handgun. Day then pointed the weapon at officers, at which time officers discharged their weapons, striking Day in the lower abdomen.
Officers disarmed Day and began providing medical care for him until the arrival of EMS. Day was then transported to a Columbia area hospital to be treated for his injuries.
On February 7, 2017 the defendant was released from the hospital and was served arrest warrants for Pointing and Presenting a Firearm and Discharging a Firearm within the City Limits of Cayce. The defendant has been transported to the Lexington County Detention Center for bond hearing.
The two officers from the city of Cayce are now on administrative leave with pay while the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division conducts its investigation at the request of the Director of the Cayce Department of Public Safety, Chief Byron Snellgrove.
