GMS Teacher of the Year becomes U.S. citizen

GILBERT, S.C. — The student body and staff at Gilbert Middle School recently celebrated one of their own reaching a meaningful milestone in her life.
In addition to being named GMS’s Teacher of the Year in September, Susana Cascante Fifer achieved a personal goal this year by becoming a naturalized United States citizen. Fifer took the oath on Monday, January 23, 2017, and the school threw a party in her honor the following Wednesday.
Previously a teacher at the Ministry of Education in her native Costa Rica, Fifer joined GMS in 2012 as a Spanish teacher.
Fifer spoke to sixth-grade iCivics students at GMS about the citizenship process and what it was like to live in Costa Rica.
