Fire destroys home on Hershel Street in Gaston

Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) A personal shop and a home were destroyed by fire on Herschel Street in Gaston Monday morning. The first of several calls was received about8:00 a.m., that the building was on fire.

A unit from the county’s Gaston station was first to arrive on the scene. They found the shop building just behind the mobile home fully involved and a portion of the house burning as well.

As more county firefighters arrived, they aggressively attacked the fire in the home. The shop building was already a total loss and there was really nothing they could do regarding it. The fire in the house was quickly brought under control, but the fire and water had already destroyed the doublewide mobile home’s interior.

According to the homeowners, Jerry and Jennie Jeffcoat, their home's contents were all ruined, but they have family members close by that were at the house helpingMonday afternoon. Their son and several of their grandsons were with them as they surveyed the destroyed home. The Red Cross was notified by the fire service, and they have also offered some assistance to the couple.

Jeffcoat said that he used the shop building for several hobbies, but all of his equipment and tools were ruined. He heated the building with a wood stove but doesn’t think that the stove was where the fire started. In truth, Jeffcoat said he had no idea what started the blaze.

The Jeffcoats said that they did have some fire insurance, but were afraid that they wouldn’t receive much since the home was an older model mobile home. He doesn’t believe that he’ll get anything as a result of the shop that was destroyed.

Although the Jeffcoats do have some clothes and a few other small personal items, they could use any assistance that the community can offer. They are relying on their faith in God to carry them through these hard times, and both know they will eventually recover. To reach them to offer your help you can call (803) 920-0426.
