Monday fire near South Congaree under investigation
South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) Investigators from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating what caused a fire to break out at a home located in the 200 block of Jacques Haven Road Monday afternoon. According to Harrison Cayhill, spokesman for Lexington County, Lexington County 911 Communications dispatched fire service and EMS units to the area in reference to a residential structure fire just after 5 p.m. When the first units arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the second story of the home.
Due to the lack of nearby fire hydrants, firefighters performed water-haul operations to provide the needed water to fight the fire. Trucks came from as far away as Pelion to assist in this. One person was transported by Lexington County EMS personnel to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. County fire officials estimate that there were approximately $145,000 in damages to the building and contents as a result of the fire. According to Captain Adam Myrick of the sheriff’s office, their investigators are working alongside SLED officers to determine the cause and origin of the fire, and if it was intentionally set. The home and property is being treated as a crime scene.
