Car crash closes Hwy 178 near Pelion and Mack Edisto

Mack Edisto, SC (Paul Kirby) – An automobile accident closed Hwy. 178 where it intersects with Austin Court last night after the accident knocked down powerlines and trapped at least one person in the wreckage. The crash happened at about 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Details regarding the crash are extremely limited; however, we do know that fire crews, EMS, and several law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the call. Mack Edisto and Pelion’s fire stations were dispatched, as well as a battalion chief and a specially equipped squad truck from South Congaree. When the first arriving firefighters arrived, they confirmed that they had at least one person trapped in the twisted metal wreckage. They also had powerlines down across the highway. This is what required them to close the road to all traffic. The extent of the injuries to the occupants was not available as of this writing. It didn’t sound by radio traffic as if anyone involved was seriously injured. Hwy. 178 was reopened just after 8:00 p.m.
