The accident occurred near the Lexington, Newberry County lines. This is in proximity to the Frayed Knot Bar & Grill, and an area that has been known as The Big & Little Gap for many years.
Details are extremely limited at this time, but an official said that at least three others were transported by EMS to a medical facility for treatment of injuries that were received in the crash. They have not said how many boats were involved or how many people in total were in the boat or boats.
The accident will be investigated by officers from DNR. They are being assisted by marine officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department, and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
This is the first fatal boating accident on Lake Murray of the 2017 season. Last year, a young fisherman died after his boat was swamped after a day on the lake. He and another friend were caught in a storm after dark. The official cause of his death was ruled hypothermia.
We will continually update this story as more detail becomes available.
