Additional details about fatal boat accident released by DNR
Lake Murray, SC (Paul Kirby) – The SC DNR has released more details regarding the boating accident that killed two men Friday night on the waters of Lake Murray. Their investigation is still ongoing and a final report may take some time to release.
Investigators say it has not been determined who actually hit whom in the accident, but it is apparent that the larger 32’ boat ran over the smaller bass boat. They have not yet determined whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
Both men who died in the accident were in the smaller bass boat. On Saturday, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said the body of Mark Daniel Phillips, 37, of Columbia was recovered just after the crash. Saturday afternoon, the body of a second victim, Christopher Shawn Lanier, 28, of Blythewood was found by SC DNR teams.
The crash took place at 11:00 p.m. near Dreher Island State Park. This is in the general vicinity of Snug Harbor, The Frayed Knot Bar & Grill, and the Timber Lake area.
Both the Lexington and Newberry County Sheriff’s Departments have assisted in the recovery, and the investigation.
