Fire destroys home Friday afternoon
Fairview, SC (Paul Kirby) – A double-wide mobile home was destroyed by fire Friday afternoon in the Fairview area of Lexington County. The call regarding the fire came in at about 2:30 p.m.
The callers reported that the home was in the 600 block of Whiskey Road off Truex Road. First arriving fire crews reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the double-wide home. More units arrived and the firefighters began their attack.
The battalion chief ordered a fire engine to go to a creek off Calks Ferry Road to set up a water supply site to fill tanker trucks, shuttling water to the fire. This is necessary when there are no fire hydrants in the area. It provides plenty of water; however, it robs the scene of firefighters to drive the tanker trucks and to operate the water site pumper.
A caller reported another fire off Neely Wingard, but it was quickly determined that they were seeing the same fire through the woods. That was cleared after one of the trucks responding to Whiskey Road heard that the second fire was being reported and cleared the confusion.
Some of the home’s residents, their family, and friends stood and watched in shock as the fire consumed their home. Firefighters did their best, but the home had been destroyed by the flames quickly, and even though they put the fire out, it was a total loss.
Lexington County had equipment and personnel from Fairview, Boiling Springs, Samaria, Gilbert, Pelion, Round Hill, and South Congaree on the fire. There was a senior fire official on scene assisting with command, and Batesburg / Leesville responded to assist as well.
Firefighters and equipment from across the county were moved up to fill in empty fire stations who were committed at the fire.
