Airport High School honored as National Unified Champion School
West Columbia, SC (Angelica Iglesias) – Airport High School was honored as a National Unified Champion School through the Special Olympics Thursday, May 11 and held a pep rally to celebrate. Airport is one of only eight schools in the state to receive this honor. A Unified Champion School’s goals are to focus on inclusion, acceptance, respect, and human dignity for all students with and without intellectual disabilities.
Airport High School was given this honor because of what the school does to include students with disabilities. These students are athletes, managers, and scorekeepers and they contribute to their arts programs and the school as a whole. They are never left out and can participate in any school event or program they would like.
Many students without disabilities help out with the program and gain just as much as the disabled ones. They learn to be compassionate and open their minds to friends they never thought they would have things in common with.
At the start of the pep rally Airport High School received a banner to hang in their gym signifying this honor. The students in the program ran out into the gym through a banner the cheerleaders made for them. The event really exemplified what those students mean to Airport High School.
