Lifelong Learning Center Summer Classes to begin June 12

Lexington, SC - Lexington County School District 3’s Lifelong Learning Center will hold summer classes beginning on June 12. Free childcare is available to on-site students. Interested adults are encouraged to come by the Lifelong Learning Center, located at 101 West Columbia Avenue, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. to register for classes or to get more information.

All GED and ESL classes are continuous. During the summer sessions, since class time is limited to three weeks in June and July, students must be prepared to attend all classes. There will be only oe make up day. Family Literacy classes are available for students who are parents. These classes will be taught collaboratively by classroom teachers and parent educators.

Summer Class Offerings:

GED Preparatory Classes – Earn FREE GED testing!

Class days and times – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Session 1 – June 12 – June 29

Session 2 – July 10 – July 27

Cost is $25 AFTER July 1

These classes are both teacher directed instruction and computer based learning. They held students prepare for the official GED exam. Classes include test-taking skills and instruction in the four subject areas covered on the GED exam. Students participate in WorkKeys, a computer-based program which identifies job-readiness skills. NOTE; All registration for the GED Exam is now online at Students must complete the online registration and make payment online. Testing locations and dates will vary.

GED testing per section is $37.50. There are 4 sections of GED assessment. If GED Ready criteria are met and the SC General Assembly renews proviso for 2017-18 for GED funding, the test fees will be waived.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes –

Class days and times – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday – 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Session 1 – June 12 – June 29

Session 2 – July 10-July 27

Cost is $25 AFTER July 1

These classes teach English to students whose native language is not English. The classes include a component on American citizenship.

Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A) Course –

Day classes begin – June 12 – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Night classes begin – July 11 – Tuesday and Thursday – 6 p.m. -9 p.m.

This course provides the textbook learning, practical skills applications, and hands-on clinical experience required to qualify to take the nationally administered Certified Nursing Assistant Exam. Representatives from the Nurse Aide Competency evaluation Service (NACES) will administer the official C.N.A. Exam at the Lifelong Learning Center at the end of the course. Students will become Certified Nursing Assistants by earning passing scores on both the classroom and exam portions of the course. Background checks will be completed on all students.

Prerequisite: Students must possess a high school diploma or GED and be 18 years old within 6 months of the start date.

Clinical times and days will be determined after the start of class. Testing date to be scheduled after classes.

This cost includes certification testing, background check, textbooks, materials, and drug screening. Additional costs that will be the responsibility of the student are: an occupational physical, TB test and uniforms. These are requirements of the class and must be completed at least 3 weeks prior to clinical.

Please note: The CNA courses are limited to 20 students and fill up quickly. A $100 deposit is required with registration to reserve a seat in the class. Students must attend all scheduled hours of the course and must participate in WorkKeys testing in order to pass. Students are responsible for providing their own uniforms. Uniform requirements will be covered the first day/night of class.

Due to the increased DHHS credit requirement there will only bet TWO evening Certified Nursing Assistant classes offered each year. Evening courses will be held in January and July ONLY.

Paraprofessional/Teaching Assistant and Substitute Teacher Training Course –

Date and time – Begins July 10 – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – 9 a.m. -1 p.m.

Cost of class $25.00

Cost of exam - $55.00

Students who complete a minimum of 30 hours of class instruction, 12 hours of Workkeys instruction, and make passing scores on the Parapro Exam will be eligible for employment in South Carolina as a teaching Assistant. In additional, substitute teachers who have completed the training are eligible for increased pay in Lexington School District 3. The Parapro Exam will be administered at the Lifelong Learning Center at the end of the course. Participants in this class must have a high school diploma or GED.
