Memorial Day fire destroys home near West Columbia and Springdale

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A fire destroyed a home in the 300 block of Winshore Drive just off Woodberry Road near the city of West Columbia and the town of Springdale. The call came in just after 7:00 a.m.

Even before the first units arrived on the scene, they reported a thick column of black smoke showing in the sky. When the first due fire equipment pulled up, they reported that the single-family home was about 50% involved in fire.

A second alarm had been transmitted before the arrival of the first trucks. This brings more manpower and water tankers that could be used to supply a water shuttle operation in the absence of fire hydrants.

Eventually, some of the equipment coming from the farthest distances. was re-routed to empty stations whose manpower and equipment were committed at the fire. They stood by at those stations in the event that another fire was to occur.

The home was deemed a total loss as a result of the fire. The county’s fire service has not released the cause of the fire or an estimate of the dollar loss to the structure.
