Red Bank, SC (Paul Kirby) A motorcycle went down hard near South Lake Drive (Hwy 6) and Platt Springs Road Tuesday afternoon, injuring both the driver and passenger of the bike. It was unclear if anyone in the vehicle that was struck was hurt in the wreck as well.
According to bystanders, the crash happened on South Lake almost directly between the Walgreens, Autozone, and the Hardees. This is just before the Platt Springs and South Lake intersection. Both riders of the bike were thrown to the pavement after hitting the vehicle.
Fire and EMS crews responded quickly as did law enforcement. South Lake Drive was closed for a short period of time while the patients were cared for and loaded for transport to a local hospital.
The male, who was apparently driving the motorcycle, had a head injury that was severe enough for the EMS crew and on scene supervisors to decide to transport him to Palmetto Richland’s Trauma Center. A Lexington County firefighter drove the ambulance to the hospital so that the full resources of the EMS crew and their training could be utilized. Friends of the bike’s driver who were also on the scene said that he was conscious, but could provide no other details regarding the extent of his injuries. His female passenger was also transported to the hospital, but her condition, although reported as less severe than the male’s, is not known at this time.
The SCHP is investigating the crash. They have not indicated if any charges will be filed, and if so, against whom.
