Lexington PD says they do not plan to charge driver in Wednesday’s fatal crash with jogger
Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) The Lexington Police Department released a statement yesterday that says they do not plan to charge the driver of the vehicle who struck a jogger before daybreak Wednesday morning on North Lake Drive near Sunset Boulevard. The jogger, later identified as John Flanagan of Lexington, sustained grave injuries during the accident and later died at Palmetto Richland hospital as a result of the injuries he sustained in the accident.
During the course of their investigation, officers found the driver of the vehicle, a West Columbia woman, was traveling eastbound on North Lake Drive toward Sunset Blvd with a green traffic signal light when Flanagan, an avid jogger, ran across the road. He was struck by the woman’s vehicle while he was in the roadway.
Lexington officers spoke with independent witnesses at the collision scene and reviewed nearby video during their investigation. This confirmed that the driver of the vehicle did not contribute to the collision that killed Flanagan.
After hitting Flanagan, the woman stopped her vehicle and made a good faith effort to locate the man who had been knocked down an embankment. She notified emergency services and stayed on the scene and cooperated with the investigators.
