Blowfish's strong pitching plucks Owls in Forest City

FOREST CITY, N.C. — After an 11-4 loss in Savannah Saturday night, the Blowfish looked to get back on track in Forest City against the Owls. The Sunday afternoon game was a makeup for a game rained out earlier in the week. The Blowfish came from behind to knock off the Owls 6-5 on the road.

The Owls struck first in the bottom of the first when they cashed in on a lead off single from AJ Wright (UMD-Baltimore County) that was followed by a Chris Chatfield (USF) RBI single. Owls led 1-0.

Lexington County tied the game in the top of the second when Chase Turner (St. Leo University) doubled down the third base line and Isaiah Madella (Shorter University) brought Turner home on an error at shortstop.

The Owls used a three run bottom of the second to retake the lead. Seth Hoagland (Iona) smacked a two run single that was immediately followed up by a RBI double off the bat of Chatfield. Forest City added a run in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead.

From that point on Blowfish pitching dominated. The Fish only allowed four hits through the last six innings of play and struck out 15 Owls for the second straight matchup between these two teams. The Blowfish cut the Forest City lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth and set their sights on an offensive explosion in the top of the eighth.

After a line-out to begin the inning, the Blowfish rattled off three straight singles to load the bases with one out. Turner plated Nick Guimbarda (Presbyterian) with an RBI single and then Issiah Madella (Shorter University) knocked in Dom Cuoci (St. Joseph’s) and Riley Hogan (South Carolina) with a two run single up the middle.

Lexington County took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the eighth.

The Blowfish got stellar relief pitching out of a pair of Pacers in the ballgame. Christian Aragon (USC-Aiken) went through three scoreless innings of work and he handed off to Hunter Dollander (USC-Aiken) for the ninth inning.

After a leadoff single from Wright, Randal Ortiz (Winston-Salem) gunned down Tyler Miller (Anderson), a pinch runner, who was trying to steal second. Following the stolen base, Dollander mowed down the next two via the strikeout and notched his third save of the season.

Aragon won his first game of the season as the Blowfish struck out 5 of the last 6 Owls to take a turn at bat. Over the last three matchups with the Owls, the Blowfish have struck out 38 Forest City batters.

Tomorrow night the Blowfish set their sights on two straight as they welcome on in the Savannah Bananas to Lexington County Baseball Stadium. Pregame on z93.1 FM The Lake is scheduled for 6:45 and first pitch from the Lex is set for 7:05 pm.
