Blowfish start second half with walk off win
LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Monday night marked a clean slate for the Blowfish in their quest for a Petitt Cup Playoff birth come August. A chance to start 1-0 in the second half would be the start that Coach Jonathan Johnson and the Fish were looking for against the Martinsville Mustangs.
The game was filled with ups and downs but the Blowfish ended up walking off on the Stangs in the bottom of ninth to win 7-6 at the Lex.
Martinsville drew first blood in the bottom of the second on a two run single from Marshall Gei (Kentucky) that gave Martinsville a 2-0 lead.
Lexington County cut the Mustang lead in half in the bottom of the second when Andres Perez (North Georgia) plated Dom Cuoci (St. Joseph’s) on an RBI single up the middle.
The Stangs came right back in the top half of the third on a Julian Lopez (Chowan) RBI double. 3-1 Martinsville led.
A huge three run bottom of the fourth reclaimed the lead for the Fish. But right back came the Mustangs in the top of the fifth to retie the ballgame.
The sixth and top of the seventh went quietly for both teams but Lexington County took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a pinch hit solo home run from Riley Hogan (South Carolina) who sent one over the right centerfield wall to give the Fish the lead 5-4.
That lead didn’t last long for the Blowfish as the Mustangs stormed back for two runs in the top of the eighth. A SAC fly and RBI single gave Martinsille a 6-5 lead.
The Blowfish went quietly in the bottom of the eighth, as did the Stangs in the top of the ninth. The bottom of the ninth was not as quiet.
Lexington County got a leadoff walk and back-to-back infield singles to load the bases with nobody out in the ninth.
With bases loaded and nobody out, Lexington County plated the tying run on a Marshawn Taylor (Grambling State) RBI walk which was followed up by a Will Thomas (Anderson) walk off SAC fly that brought in Cuoci from third.
The Fish sent the home fans happy with the 7-6 walk off win from Lexington County Baseball Stadium. The Blowfish look for their second straight win on the 4th of July Tuesday when they welcome on in their in state rival Florence into the Lex.
Pregame on z93.1-FM The Lake is slated for 7:05 and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 from Lexington County Baseball Stadium.
