Sheriff’s Department K-9 units assisting South Congaree PD after prisoner escapes traffic stop

South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) A prisoner escaped from a South Congaree police officer after he was arrested during a traffic stop. The incident took place near Congaree Elementary School, Ramblin Road and Oak Street.

According to South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert, the prisoner was handcuffed and placed in the rear of a patrol car for transport to the detention center when an accomplice, who was not under arrest at that time, leaped from their vehicle, opened the door of the patrol car, and allowed the suspect to escape. Police cars are usually absent door handles inside the rear of the car so that the suspect can’t open the doors once they are placed in the transport area of the vehicle.

After the man fled the original location of the stop, the female accomplice was immediately arrested for aiding in the escape. The car the pair was in has also been impounded now as evidence.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 29 years of age, with blond hair, possibly cut in a Mohawk, who is wearing blue jean shorts. The man fled with his hands cuffed behind his back. They believe they have identified the suspect, but have not publicly released his name.

Officers say that he ran in the general direction of Genesis Circle and may have crossed Main Street toward the north side of Ramblin Road. He could also still be hiding in the general vicinity of Jackson’s Mobile Home Park, Oak Street, or the portions of Church Street closest to Main Street. It is not known if he still has the handcuffs on.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department immediately responded with additional manpower and several of their K-9s to assist in the hunt for the man. Officers from a number of other departments also assisted in setting up a perimeter to contain the suspect.

Anyone who sees this individual is asked to immediately dial 911. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
