Chapin Prepares to Host 38th Annual Chapin Labor Day Festival & Parade
Chapin, SC – Volunteers and staff have been working behind the scenes for months to prepare for the 38th Annual Chapin Labor Day Festival and Parade, which is scheduled for Monday, September 4, 2017. Organizers got so much positive response to last year’s theme “Chapin – The Heart of Lake Murray,” that they are using it again this year. As Chapin’s signature event, thousands of residents and visitors flock to the lakeside community for a day of family fun and festivities, which is made possible in part by the generosity of Lexington Medical Center’s continued support as the Grand Sponsor of the event.
Dr. Ronald “Doc” Crawford will serve as this year’s Grand Marshall for the Labor Day Parade. Doc Crawford owned and operated Chapin Pharmacy for many years on Clark Street and is getting ready to celebrate his 100th birthday. The parade begins at 9:30 am, starting from the GIS parking lot at 917 Chapin Road and goes straight through town to the Bi-Lo shopping center. Parade participants are required to incorporate the festival theme into their entries which are judged, and awards are given in several categories for the best floats.
Immediately following the parade, there will be live entertainment on the Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative Stage featuring Chapin’s own The Shelby Raye Band. In addition, there is the Children’s Area featuring activities and games on Clark Street sponsored this year by Publix and O’Leary Orthodontics; a classic car show hosted by the Columbia Classic Chevy Club,Morgan & Associates Nationwide and Zesto’s of Chapin in the Mt. Horeb parking lot off Beaufort Street; and street vendors selling a variety of arts and crafts, clothing items, food and knick knacks. The Chapin Branch Library will be holding its annual book sale in the Community Room at Chapin Town Hall (157 NW Columbia Avenue) until 2:30 pm, with proceeds benefitting children and youth reading programs.
Other events included as part of the Labor Day weekend are the Chapin Downtown Farmer’s Market on Saturday, September 2 from 8:30 – 11 am on Clark Street and the Blues on Beaufort Street Sunday evening concert. Sponsored by Chapin Liquor and the Tipsy Toad Tavern, Anthony Charles and the Blues Dolphins will take the Beaufort Street stage for an evening of great music and fun, starting at 7 pm.
Additional sponsors and supporters for the festival include Z 93 the Lake, Lexington County, American Legion Post 193, the Justin Pepper Foundation, GIS and Chapin Baptist Youth.
There are entry forms for the parade and vendor applications available on the Town’s website – chapinsc.com. And check out the latest updates on the Chapin Labor Day Festival Weekend on its Facebook page or on Twitter.
