Lexington County man charged with attempted murder after fight with family member

LEXINGTON, S.C. – A Chapin man is charged with attempted murder for threatening a family member with a butcher knife and knocking the victim unconscious. Nicholas David Powlas, 42, also faces two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child because of his actions toward juvenile family members during the altercation Saturday, according to arrest warrants. Deputies said Powlas was aggressive toward the children. “Powlas is also charged with failure to stop for blue lights after a deputy tried to stop him as he drove away from the incident location,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Powlas initiated a pursuit that lasted about 9 miles and ended in Newberry County. Following the chase, one of our deputies arrested him with help from members of the Little Mountain Rescue Squad.” Powlas is also be charged with having an open container of alcohol in his truck at the time of his arrest, according to Koon. A judge has denied Powlas bond on the attempted murder and failure to stop for blue lights charge. His bond has been set at $50,000 for the unlawful conduct toward a child charges. He’s being held in the Lexington County Detention Center.
