Saluda River bacteria levels now safe for water recreation
Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - The swimming advisory that had been issued for the lower Saluda River has been lifted. State DHEC officials had warned against going into the water around Saluda Shoals Park due to higher than normal bacteria levels in the area.
Agency officials said that discharge from the Carolina Water Service Friarsgate facility and heavy rains over the weekend were both possible reasons for the higher bacteria levels. Tests performed in the area Wednesday show the levels are now fine for swimming and other related activities.
Bill Spangler, The Congaree Riverkeeper, will appear at approximately 7:45 a.m. next Tuesday on Good Morning Lexington County. One of the topics he will discuss will be water quality and pollution of our area’s rivers. You can watch the show on Facebook Live daily at 7:00 a.m. at Facebook.com/swlexledger.
