South Congaree Rodeo back and better than ever
South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) – The South Congaree Rodeo is back for its second year and it promises to be bigger and better than ever! It will be held on Friday and Saturday nights this coming weekend.
According to Buck Coggins, one of the rodeo's promoters, this year’s rodeo will be one of the IPRA’s premier events. Coggins said that they have already registered six reigning IPRA champions to compete this weekend. “Because we offer so much prize money, you are going to see some of the best rodeo talent on the circuit right here in South Congaree. Every dollar the cowboys win is considered a point towards the championship, so only the very best, top tier competitors will be riding and roping here at this rodeo.”
Coggins said that Scooter Smith will be the rodeo clown this weekend. Smith is from Arkansas, and has placed numerous times in the IFR Contract Acts Showcase. He has been selected to work many rodeo finals across the country.
Scooter started his rodeo career riding bulls some 15 years ago. He then went on to became a professional rodeo clown and entertainer. He rodeos year-round, and logs some 10,000 miles a year working rodeos, and professional bull riding events across the USA. The clown helps keep the rodeo flowing smoothly, provides entertainment for the crowds during pauses, and is key to the safety of the riders. That’s why it’s so important to have a pro like Scooter working your event.
The Ken Treadway Company will be the stock contractor again this year. They’ve been in business over 30 years, are based in SC, and are one of the premier contractors on the circuit.
Treadway has owned many world champion animals including several that currently hold titles and will be in South Congaree this weekend. He has actually owned bulls that have held the title of Bucking Bull of the Year 5 out of the last 6 years.
Treadway plans to bring Fast & Furious, one of the circuits, rankest bulls. He is one of only two bulls to ever win back to back world titles. Treadway will also have Texas Black Twister in South Congaree for the weekend. He is the reigning IPRA World Champion bull. It will be pure excitement to see if anyone can stay on his back for a mere 8 seconds.
If you want to see some fine bucking horses, plan to keep your eyes open for War Horse and Desperado. Both are IPRA World Champions as well. These horses are some of the rankest on the circuit, and it takes an experienced rider to get anywhere close to a full ride on the back of one of these two.
This is a full rodeo that also features roping, team roping, and other classic events. You can expect to see cowboys and cowgirls, along with lots of pageantry, and some beautiful animals as well. There will also be vendors of all types that will be selling everything from cowboy gear to sno-cones, cold drinks, and hamburgers.
The rodeo will be held both Friday and Saturday night at the arena in South Congaree. That’s at 395 Oak Street in West Columbia, just across the street from the fire station. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and the rodeo begins nightly at 8:00 p.m. Because the arena in South Congaree is covered, sudden and evening afternoon showers don’t stop the event from proceeding, so plan to bring the family and enjoy the rodeo no matter the weather forecast.
