One dead in nighttime crash near Irmo
Irmo, SC (Paul Kirby) State Troopers are looking into a fatal crash that happened in the Irmo / St. Andrews area of the county Wednesday night. The crash occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Fernandina Road close to the intersection of Piney Grove Road northeast of the town. This is the frontage road to I-26 and the crash occurred in the general vicinity of the Sportsman’s Warehouse.
According to investigating officers, a car traveling south on Fernandina Road crossed over the center-line of the road before dropping off its left side. At that point, the driver apparently over-corrected and was hit on the passenger side by a truck coming from the opposite direction. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was trapped in the wreckage of the car and had to be extricated by first responders from the Irmo Fire District.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck. That person’s identity is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin by the Lexington County Coroner’s office. The driver of the truck was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The SC Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are investigating the wreck.
