Serious wreck between Edmund and South Congaree causes call for medical helicopter

Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A serious car wreck required a medical helicopter response Tuesday afternoon. The crash, which was reported at approximately 5:00 p.m., happened on Gator Road near Luther Drive between South Congaree and the Edmund sand mines.

Original callers reported that a heavy truck pulling a backhoe collided with a smaller vehicle, and one of them overturned. The callers also reported that one occupant might be trapped in the wreckage.

Ladder 5, Squad 5, and Engine 13 responded from South Congaree and Edmund fire stations, as did several EMS units, and law enforcement officers. Eventually, Gator Road was completely shut down as the rescuers rendered assistance to the injured on the scene.

The EMS crews requested that a Lifenet helicopter respond after evaluating the injured people on the scene. South Congaree Police Officers set up the landing zone at the equestrian arena on Oak Street across from the fire station. They were assisted by Battalion Two from the fire service.

Eventually, the most severely injured patient was transported by ground to the landing zone. That patient was transferred to the helicopter for a short flight to the trauma center at Palmetto Richland. The condition of that patient, and the actual number of people injured in the accident, were not available as of this writing.

The SCHP is investigating this accident.
