Improvements currently being made to Lexington County Airport at Pelion

Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) Construction is underway to make some significant improvements to Lexington County’s small airport in the town of Pelion. The airport has been in the area for decades and ownership of it was transferred from the town to Lexington County in December of 2004.

It is what’s known as a GA, or general aviation airport. Its webpage says that it supports a variety of GA and sport aeronautical operations and is home to a number of aircraft. Located just north of the Town of Pelion, the airport consists of approximately 189.27 acres of land and features a single runway.

The runway, which is 4,335 feet long and is designed for small single and twin-engine piston aircraft that weigh less than 12,500 pounds, is equipped with a parallel taxiway. The runway is being widened from 60 feet to 75 feet, but it will remain the same length, according to Harrison Cahill, spokesman for Lexington County.

There has been some talk among county leaders regarding lengthening and strengthening the runway in the past, but no decisions have been made on that at the present time. Lengthening the runway, and making it stronger, could possibly open the door for larger planes like small corporate jets to begin to use the facility in the future.

All 22 of the hangers at the airport are currently leased, but no additional hangars are being added right now, according to Cahill. He said that there are four airplanes that are currently on a waiting list for hanger space at the airport should more become available. There are some tiedowns available on the tarmac for storage of more aircraft outside.

The average square footage of a hangers at this airport depends on its shape. Cahill said that a box hangar has 1,386 square feet, while a T-hangar has 1,040 square feet. Box hangars lease for$178.00 a month, and the T-hangars go for $165.00 per month. Each person who leases a hangar also pays an additional $8.50per month for utilities.

In addition to the hangers at the airport, Lexington County is installing a WeatherHawk weather station and WIFI in the terminal building. It already has a 24-hour self-service 100 octane low-lead aviation fuel.

The general contractor on the project is Summers Concrete Contracting Inc. They are using Sox & Son out of Springdale to do the dirt-work and site prep.

The total cost of the project is $4.05 million and is being paid for mostly by government grants. Construction grants received a total $3.9 million, of which $3.5 million was provided by the FAA. The SC Aeronautics Commission pitched in $194,905, and Lexington County come up with the remaining balance of $194,905.

The total cost of the design grants was $162,410. Here again, the largest portion or $146,170 was provided by the FAA, with $8,210 coming from the SC Aeronautics Commission, and $8,120 came from the county.

The runway improvement project is expected to take 90 days to complete. It is estimated that it should be finished on or about December 5th, 2017.
