The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Run set for this afternoon

Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Run will be held in Columbia tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m. Each year, a large contingency of firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement officers, and citizens from Lexington County participate in this annual event that raises money for a multitude of activities. This event often helps support the families of fallen first responders, the needs of America’s bravest who are either sick or injured, raises awareness of the events of 9/11 and the heroic actions of those who were there or responded, and many other worthwhile causes.

According to the website tunnel2towers.org, the run/walk is named in memory and honor of former NY City firefighter Stephen Siller. On September 11, 2001, Stephen, who was assigned to Brooklyn’s Squad 1, had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when he got word over his scanner of a plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Upon hearing the news, Stephen called his wife Sally and asked her to tell his brothers he would catch up with them later. He returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.

Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers. There, he gave up his life while saving others.

Since Stephen died, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Foundation has had a tremendous impact on the lives of thousands who have served selflessly. The Foundation has provided significant financial support in the form of trust accounts and mortgage payoffs to those left behind by first responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This is just one of the projects and causes they’ve gotten behind or spearheaded.

Although the foundation is active nationwide, our local event will start this afternoon at the 9/11 memorial in the VISTA. Its actual address is 1101 Lincoln Street in Columbia. From that point, participants will run or walk a designated route while raising money for the foundations.

The SC event’s main sponsor is the Lexington Medical Center. It is a 5K event (3.1 miles), and you can still register today, even though the event is tonight. All you have to do is go by the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center beginning at 10 a.m.to register and pay. There is a $5.00 fee added to the registration for those who sign up today.

There are other things to see and do at this event. The after party is a family friendly event that features live music, food, drinks, exhibits, and lots of other things for the entire family to enjoy. That is happening at the Convention Center as well.
