West Columbia hires new fire chief
WEST COLUMBIA, SC (September 7, 2017) - The City of West Columbia Fire Department has announced the appointment of Christopher Smith as its new fire chief. Chief Smith will be relocating to the City of West Columbia from Westminster, South Carolina where he currently serves as the fire chief of their department.
Chief Smith started his fire service career in 1991 with the Westminster Fire Department and served in the ranks of firefighter and lieutenant. In 2004, he was appointed to the position of fire chief, ultimately leading the department to obtain a Class 2 ISO rating under his leadership.
Chief Smith possesses an associate’s degree in Computer Technology from Tri-County Technical College and an associate’s degree in Fire Science from Greenville Technical College. He occasionally serves as an instructor for the South Carolina Fire Academy, instructing Fire Officer I & II courses. Chief Smith also serves as the 1st Vice-President of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs.
In his spare time, Chief Smith officiates, both high school football and baseball. Smith and his wife recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and have two wonderful children; one is a sophomore in college and one is currently in middle school.
Chief Smith will begin his new position on September 25, 2017.
