Several serious wrecks cause injuries and traffic snarls near Swansea and Sandy Run Sunday afternoon
Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) Several serious accidents occurred Sunday afternoon and evening that injured people and caused traffic tie-ups Sunday afternoon and into the evening in the southwest portion of the county. Both required the response of EMS, fire, and law enforcement to care for the injured, deal with the traffic, investigate the cause of the crashes, and get the roads back open.
The first wreck happened on Whetstone Road near Lee Witt Road southwest of the town of Swansea. This is close to Nucor Building Systems. It occurred before 4:00 p.m.
Firefighters from the county’s Swansea Fire Station responded quickly, as did others, and personnel and equipment from EMS were dispatched at the same time. When they arrived, they realized they had several injured patients, and eventually the first arriving rescuers requested another EMS unit. Law enforcement officials also were on the scene assisting with the traffic.
Eventually, all the injured were treated and transported, and the trooper got the crashed cars and debris removed from the road so that it could be re-opened.
The second accident was reported after 6 p.m. near St. Matthews Road and Samaria Highway. For some time, that area was also closed off as the rescuers from Sandy Run and Swansea dealt with the aftermath of the crash.
It took several hours for this area to be cleared so that traffic could return to its normal flow. Firefighters turned the scene over to the SCHP at approximately 8:12 p.m. and returned to their stations.
oth of these accidents are under investigation by the SCHP.
