Chapin Mayor Message for week of October 9

Last Wednesday I was invited to participate in a fundraising challenge for the American Cancer Society’s Real Men Wear Pink Midlands campaign. Along with several of our Midlands mayors, Michael Bishop of Springdale, Mike Ross of Blythewood and Steve MacDougall of Lexington, I will be raising money to support breast cancer awareness and prevention through the month of October. You can visit my page to make a donation online. Thank you in advance for your support!

We had a great turnout last Thursday for the Candidates Forum. Thank you to the Columbia Woman’s Club for hosting this event so that residents can be more informed about the people running for Chapin Town Council and Mayor and the challenges we face as a growing community. While we have some difficult issues ahead of us, they are not insurmountable if we can work together as a council, committed to learning what our choices are and acting in the best interest of our larger community. I am committed to doing that and hope my fellow council members will do the same.

This weekend several of us, including Joe Dever and Al Koon, braved the rains and participated in the Chapin Circuits Walk. While the weather may have deterred some folks from coming out, those who did walk enjoyed a time of exercise and fellowship. It was a great opportunity to talk with the other walkers and build community. Then we were able to walk around and visit the vendors at the Chapin Downtown Farmer’s Market. We had 15 vendors celebrating our Oktoberfest weekend with great deals, delicious baked goods and German food while the horns of the Wunder Wiener Sauerkraut Boys played along in the background. Thanks to everyone who has supported the market this year, and we look forward to bringing it back better and bigger next year.

I know that Jerry Caldwell is busy planning his second Fall Arts Festival on September 21, in the parking lot in front of The Coffee Shelf. Like our farmer’s market, he will have a variety of vendors, artists, arts and crafts, food and live music to entertain our citizens and visitors to the area. These types of events are such a great way to connect to others in our town, and I hope you will take some time out of your Saturday morning to be part of it.

The Chapin Police Department is hosting Chapin Fall Night Out on Wednesday, October 25 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm on Beaufort and Clark Streets. Sgt. Bill Finch is organizing this year’s event, which include fun activities for all ages as well as opportunities to interact with members of our public safety and law enforcement community. Please mark your calendars to be part of this vital awareness event.
