Investigation still ongoing in shooting death near Three Fountains
Three Fountains, SC (Paul Kirby) – SLED is assisting the Cayce Department of Public Safety with a shooting death earlier in the week that claimed the life of a man in the Hunter’s Mill sub-division near the Three Fountains Skating Rink. William Player Holland, 30, died of a gunshot wound according to law enforcement officials.
When asked about the circumstances surrounding the death, Chief Byron Snellgrove of the Cayce Department of Public Safety said, “It appears to be accidental but is still under investigation.” SLED is assisting the Cayce Department with this case.
According to individuals who are familiar with the incident, Holland worked at a Greenville, SC hospital. He and the other person involved, who was a local medical professional, were both firearms enthusiast. The two men were handling weapons Monday at the home when one of the guns discharged and the projectile struck and killed Holland.
Neighbors said that they were shocked Monday to see police officers and crime scene tape at the home in their area. Other residents said that Hunter’s Mill is usually a very quiet neighborhood that has little need for a frequent law enforcement presence.
Hunter’s Mill, which is off Emanuel Church Road north of Platt Springs, is a neighborhood that is in the city of Cayce even though it is far away from what’s considered the main body or the traditional footprint of the municipality. It became a part of city when the subdivision was developed as a portion of the agreement for Cayce to supply its water services.
