Small fire in new strip building on Sunset Boulevard causes minor damage

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) Construction workers accidentally started a small fire that was quickly put out in a newly constructed strip building in the 5300 block of Sunset Boulevard Friday in Lexington. This is close to Palmetto Parkway and Powell Drive east of the town’s center.

There was some welding going on at the time that may have started the blaze. Lexington police officers were first to arrive on scene, and they reported that there were flames and smoke coming from the roof of the structure. As the first firefighters arrived, they went into investigative mode to check and see how far the fire had extended.

A second alarm was struck as a precaution by a senior responding fire official. This is done for additional manpower, as much as for the extra equipment that responds when a fire advances past the initial alarm. Once it was discovered that the fire was small and could be handled by the crews on the scene, the second alarm fire companies were released.

Firefighters quickly had the blaze under control. Damage to the building was reported to be minimal.
