Chapin Mayor's Message for week of October 16, 2017

This morning I had the pleasure of reading poetry to first grader Carson Hoover at Chapin Elementary School. This is my third year participating in the Chapin Readers program, and I thoroughly enjoy interacting with these young students. If you have a passion for reading and supporting our youth, I encourage you to reach out to our schools and see how you can volunteer to make a positive difference for our community.

Speaking of community, Sergeant Bill Finch has been busy finalizing details for our Chapin Fall Night Out on Wednesday, October 25th on Beaufort and Clark Streets. In fact he’s got so many great activities planned, he’s extended the time from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. There will be presentations by the Columbia Marionette Theatre, a laser light show, rides on the Carolina Choo Choo Train, several bouncy houses, food vendors and music available for enjoyment by all ages. This is a great opportunity for community members to interact with our public safety and law enforcement professionals so I hope we will have a big turnout for this annual outreach event.

We have a council meeting this week and have a full agenda. One of the items will be our annual recognition of Environmental Systems Operators Week which is October 22-28, 2017. This is a time where we acknowledge the important role our Utilities staff plays in protecting public health and the environment through their efforts and continued education. We are very proud of our team and their efforts to provide a high level of customer service in the maintenance and operation of our water and sewer systems. If you see one of our Utilities team members out around town or in your neighborhood, please take a moment to thank them for their hard work and professionalism.

There has been some online chatter about our wastewater treatment expansion and the proposed survey of our force main lines that reach into the Hilton area. These are projects that we as a council have been discussing and reviewing recommendations from our experienced staff for more than two years. We receive detailed reports from Andy Metts and his team that we review, ask pertinent questions and in some cases, have individual meetings to better understand what is needed to ensure we provide a high level of service for our utilities customers and remain in compliance with all state and federal regulations. Everything we have done related to our wastewater treatment plant design and construction has been fully supported by our council. If you want to learn more about what the town is doing, I invite you to attend our council meetings. You can review the agenda items and reports on our website. You can schedule meetings with our staff. They are happy to help answer questions and are committed to acting in the best interest of our community.

Together We Stand – Chapin Proud!
