District Five parenting services grow young minds through Ready by Five Little Learners program
Irmo, SC - Parents of children who are not yet enrolled in school have a unique opportunity in Lexington-Richland School District Five.
One component offered by Ready by Five Parenting and Family Literacy Services is Ready by Five Little Learners. The program is a free, six-week parent-child interactive class designed to engage families and build on their knowledge of child development. Presented by its team of Family Educators, Ready by Five Little Learners incorporates the Parents as Teachers “What You Do Matters!” series to cover topics consisting of neuroscience, motor, language, social-emotional and cognitive development.
“Ready by Five Little Learners has been a tremendous success for our district and our families,” said Jennifer Felkel, Coordinator of Family Literacy, Parenting and Social Work Services for District Five. “Not every child is prepared to learn by the time they enroll in kindergarten. These early intervention classes encourage parents to interact in a group setting while learning skills that prepare their children for school entry.”
Parents, like Shukla Shetty, have found the Ready by Five Little Learners program to be extremely beneficial for her three preschoolers.
“This has not only taught my children new skills, but myself as well,” Shetty said, “I have learned how to handle emotions from my babies. Little Learners has been so useful for my family and I know that Ready by Five will have my children prepared for kindergarten.”
Over the course of the six weeks, Ready by Five’s family educators say the growth in the parent-child relationship is enhanced by their participation.
“We see so much progress in our families that participate in Ready by Five Little Learners,” said Vickie Roberts. “We see parents eager to learn about their child’s development and enriched by their opportunities provided during each session. It’s why we do what we do; making a difference in our family’s lives.”
