Irmo PD receives DUI grant

Irmo, SC - The Irmo Police Department is excited to announce being named a recipient of a grant from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety Office of Highway Safety and Justice Programs (OHSJP). This grant will allow the Irmo Police Department to expand its efforts in combating drunk and drugged driving by creating a DUI Enforcement Unit.

Traffic collisions compound the already-crowded traffic flow in Irmo and the surrounding area. Reviewing the 2011-2015 statistics from the OHSJP, there were 24 fatal collisions, 118 severe injury collisions, 2,728 other injury collisions and 8,834 property damage only collisions in Irmo and the surrounding area. An analysis of those same statistics revealed that impaired drivers contributed to those collisions. Driving under the influence was a factor in 54% of the fatal collisions in Irmo and the surrounding area.

The Irmo Police Department will be attacking this problem head on through DUI enforcement efforts within the Town of Irmo. You will see an increased effort by the Irmo Police to specifically target those who get behind the wheel after drinking too much or using drugs that impair driving. The Irmo Police will work with other agencies and the Law Enforcement Network to conduct checkpoints and high visibility enforcement efforts during special events such as the upcoming holidays, Super Bowl Sunday, and other events with identified DUI problems.
