District Five students serve as “expert presenters” at EdVenture Children’s Museum

Irmo, SC - Members of the Center for Advanced Technical Studies InvenTeam discussed and demonstrated hovercraft technology at EdVenture Children’s Museum on November 11. The presentation was part of the museum’s “Maker of the Month” series.

Students Byron DeJesus and Jamison Mahoney instructed over 70 children and parents on how to construct hovercrafts using compact discs, wooden spools and balloons. Rides were also given on The Center’s leaf blower-powered hovercraft.

“This was such a neat experience to be a part of EdVenture’s ‘Maker of the Month’ series,” DeJesus said. “Being able to teach kids about hovercraft technology was a cool experience and a great way to show what we learn at The Center.”

DeJesus and Mahoney are a part of Dr. Martin Cwiakala’s InvenTeam. This afterschool club allows students to engage in engineering competitions, to invent and to engage in community outreach.
