Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) Lexington County Sheriff’s Deputies, EMS personnel, a crew from the county’s Gilbert Fire Station, and SC State Troopers are out on the scene where a woman was struck and killed by a car at approximately 6:30 a.m. Friday morning near Gilbert. They are in the vicinity of 1450 Broad Street and crews have closed off the road to traffic while they worked to assist the coroner’s office and law enforcement officer who were investigating the cause of death.
It is extremely early in the investigation and officers have stressed that it much too early to say if the deceased had been struck by a car or if they died from some other cause. The determination of the cause of death, notification of the next of kin, and the identification of the deceased is handled by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher’s office. Normally, her office schedules an autopsy by a pathologist as soon as possible to help in that determination.
It has since been confirmed that the body was of a Caucasian woman was struck by a car. The driver of the car did stop and has been cooperating in the investigation.
If, at some point during their investigation, they find that something criminal has occurred, they will then assist the appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigation. This information will be released as it becomes available.
