Home destroyed by fire in Batesburg-Leesville
Batesburg-Leesville, SC [Keegan Gault] – A single family home was destroyed by a fire at approximately around 1:30 Monday. This occurred in the 300 block of Mill Street in Batesburg-Leesville.
According to Batesburg-Leesville's fire chief Jay Hendrix, when the first firefighters arrived on the scene there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the home. As the first due firefighters set up the truck, more volunteers arrived on the scene and began to attack the fire. Manpower and equipment from Lexington County fire service also arrived to assist in the firefighting.
Officers from the Batesburg-Leesville police department completely closed Mill Street to protect a hose that had been stretched from the truck to the nearby fire hydrant. This also provided an additional measure of safety for the firefighters working on the scene. A Lexington County EMS unit was also at the fire, standing by for the safety of the firefighters and the public.
The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. Firefighters remained on the scene sometime after that checking to make sure that the fire was completely out. Hendrix said that he would begin an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire..
The family that lived in the home was completely displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross was notified to assist them..
