Veterans helping man whose home burned in West Columbia
West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – Several weeks ago, a man lost the small home he had rented and lived in on Center Street in West Columbia when it caught fire and burned. Sidney had lived in the home for some time and it was really all he had. Although the fire department was able to put the fire out, the home was damaged by the flames, smoke, and water to the point that he lost everything that he had. Now, a group of veterans are rallying around Sidney to see if they can help him recover from this tragedy.
According to Billy Oswald of Oswald and Burnside, LLC, a local attorney and veteran who’s a member of the West Columbia American Legion Post #79, the members of the post felt that it was the right time and the right thing to do to help the man in his time of need. Sidney has helped the post with their maintenance, cutting their grass, and other odd jobs for years and now, the post is ready to give back to him in his time of need.
On Tuesday, December 4, Post 79 will be collecting donations at their regular meeting for Sidney. Oswald said that 100% of everything they collect will go straight to him so that he can use it during his recovery. “Sidney is down on his luck as most of us have been,” Oswald said. “When people like him are struggling we want to help.” Right now, Sidney needs money, clothes, his size for the most part is 2XL, and regular household items.
To make a donation to help Sidney in the fire recovery effort, you can drop off checks and money at the Oswald Law Firm which is right next door to Sidney’s burned out house.
