District Five high school holds its annual Goodwill Brunch for the Irmo community
Irmo, SC – More than 300 people gathered at Irmo High School for its fifth annual Goodwill Brunch on December 7. The event was created a few years ago to bridge the generation gap between students and senior citizens by inviting them to see student performances and tour the school facility.
“There are so many good things about it that allow the people in our community to interact and get to know our students and see how great they really are. We also use this as a service opportunity,” Irmo High principal David Riegel said.
Following a meal provided by the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission and the District Five student nutrition department, guests were treated to performances from the Irmo High school Master Class Orchestra, Honors Theater students, Jazz band, the Stingette Dance Team, World Percussion Ensemble and more.
“Students use our arts program to serve others, and it is a great way to showcase the great art we have at Irmo High School,” Riegel said. “It shows our appreciation for the people in our community and it allows them to have that interaction that I think in turn allows people in our community to be advocates for our school because they see how great our kids are.”
“It’s very important also because it’s a community partnership. We started four years ago with the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission to offer this event. They provide the food and coordination with our student nutrition office, they actually bring many of our guests. It’s just a great partnership and it’s a great opportunity for our students to give back.”
District Five School Board member Ellen Baumgardner was in attendance and was delighted to see students in action.
“It is so touching to see our students offer their talents to the community, especially during this holiday season,” Baumgardner said. “Irmo High School has so much to be proud of. From the service the students offered during our brunch, to the arts performances, this event is always one I look forward to!”
