Mobile home damaged by wildfire in Wild Meadows neighborhood

Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – At approximately 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Lexington County firefighters responded to a woods fire threatening structures in the 100 block of Wild Bird Lane in the Wild Meadows neighborhood. This is off Fish Hatchery Road near Sharpe’s Septic Tank Service.

Trucks and firefighters responded from Gaston, Sharpe’s Hill, South Congaree, and several other county stations. Additionally, some equipment that was not committed to the fire was moved around to fill in at empty stations.

When firefighters arrived, they found a fast-moving grass fire being pushed by the strong winds. Several of the mobile homes in the area were threatened. The crews made their attack using specially equipped trucks that have nozzles mounted on their front bumper. These can be controlled by joysticks from the cab so that the operator can move quickly to catch, and then stop, the advance of the fire.

According to Harrison Cahill, spokesman for Lexington County, approximately two acres of the grassland and brush were burned by the fire. Additionally, several manufactured homes were threatened and at least one was damaged. He does not know the extent of the damage to that home at this time.

The fire was fully controlled and the fire crews were returning to their quarters just before 3:00 p.m. We will update this story if more information becomes available.
