At least one dead after car runs under tractor trailer at Pond Branch and I-20
Pond Branch, SC (Paul Kirby) – At least one person has died after a car ran under the trailer portion of a tractor trailer truck Wednesday night. Fire, EMS, and law enforcement were dispatched to the wreck just before 8:30 p.m.
When the first rescuers arrived, they found that the car had run under the trailer of the truck near the off ramp to I-20. Two individuals were confirmed trapped in the wreckage after the roof of the car was mangled, and their seats had collapsed backwards during the impact. Firefighters who were first on the scene reported that they could hear one of the trapped people displaying labored breathing. This normally indicates serious injuries. They couldn’t hear the other victim or see any movement from that person.
The rescuers were able to get one of the car doors open, and were able to quickly free one of the patients. That person was loaded in one of the ambulances on the scene and it immediately set off for the local trauma center. The weather had been stormy in the area all afternoon which usually makes the Life Reach medical helicopter unavailable.
Once the emergency workers accessed the second victim, it was discovered that this person had perished in the crash. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office was notified, and they responded with several deputy coroners to that scene. Pond Branch Road was completely closed and troopers were telling motorists that they had to turn around as it would stay closed for some time.
The accident is under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office and the SCHP. The name of the decedent will not be released by the coroner’s office until the family has been notified. An autopsy is usually ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
