House fire heavily damages home on Cedarcrest; Homeowner suspects fireworks was cause

Lexington, SC - 3:00 p.m. (Paul Kirby) A house fire that was reported at approximately 2:20 p.m. New Year’s Day completely shutdown Cedarcrest Road between Augusta and Two Notch Roads for a short time. The fire service had a large diameter hose stretched from a fire hydrant for water supply and the fire service commander quickly asked officers from the Lexington Police Department to close the road.

A Lexington County EMS unit arrived on scene before the firefighters. They reported that there was fire coming from the front and right end of the home. Callers had advised that someone was on the scene trying to fight the fire with a garden hose, but the home had been evacuated. Crews enroute to the fire could see smoke from the burning home from South Lake Drive in Red Bank.

A number of firefighters were on the scene, and crews were inside actively fighting the fire at one point. The fire appears to have extended into the attack area. There was also a crew on the roof working to vent the heat and gasses that are trapped when a home burns. This type of ventilation helps the fire show itself so that the interior teams can find and put out the flames. SCE&G has been requested to secure the power and gas service to the home.

At 2:51 p.m. Battalion Chief One, the on-duty supervisor for the North Region, had marked the fire under control. This means that the fire is no longer growing, and can usually be handled with the personnel and equipment that are on the scene. The fire will not be deemed out until all of the fire and hot spots have been completely extinguished.

A Ledger correspondent on the scene of the fire spoke with the home's owner. That owner told us that he believes that someone was shooting fireworks outside, and those set the grass on fire outside the home. The grass fire then extended to the home setting it on fire. This has not been confirmed by a trained fire investigator.

We will continually update this story as more information becomes available.
